Stand up paddle boarding – also known as SUP – is America’s new favorite hobby, and Odyssey Board Shop has all the equipment you need to help you get in on the action. Rent yourself an easy-to-use board, or perhaps something more advanced, and find out for yourself what all of the fuss is about. Go on a relaxing eco tour with a member of our team here at Odyssey, or choose instead to marvel at the eye-catching sights found in and around Shem Creek.
Our Odyssey Board Shop sits in the most enviable of locations, so we can launch you directly from Shem Creek itself if you want us to. Call us ahead of time, and we’ll do all of the hard work for you. Your board will be in the water, meaning all you have to do is hop on and get paddling.
SUP is a pastime the whole family will enjoy!
If you’re new to the term, or a little late on the craze, do not worry because you’re not the only one. Standup paddle boarding is quite literally standing on an oversized surfboard and paddling through the open water – like canoeing but on your feet and with only one paddle! It’s a lot easier than it sounds, we promise. In fact, anyone who can stand up tall on their two feet shouldn’t have a problem. Standup paddle boarding is a safe activity for people of all ages, sizes and athletic ability.
At Odyssey, all the paddle boards we rent out are super stable American made paddle boards. Generally 11 feet long and 30 inches wide, paddle boards look a lot your typical surfboard although twice the size. They are commonly made of polyurethane and fiberglass and have a rubber foot mat in the middle to help paddlers maintain their stability. The paddle itself resembles a canoe paddle, but lighter, longer, and with a peculiar bend near the blade. Ideally, you can expect your paddle to be 4 to 7 inches taller than you.
Compared to kayaks and canoes, standup paddle boards give you a unique vantage point. Standing up, opposed to sitting down, directs your gaze downwards into the clear blue or straight ahead out across the horizon. When you paddle you can see everything below you and everything around you. When the water is clear you can expect to see some unbelievable wildlife just underneath your own two feet. The experience is simply incomparable. Paddling itself is a relaxed and meditative process, the sights and sounds just add to the tranquility.
Amazing things happen when you paddle. You will see incredible wildlife, you might catch a wave or two, and you may meet knew people (SUPers are some of the coolest people around).
Be prepared to fall off your board your first time, in fact you may even want to fall off on purpose so you can get a feel for getting back on your board in the water. However, once you fall off you’re considered an official member of the exclusive SUP club.
If you’re a little unsteady or maybe a tad nervous, start on your knees. If you fall off, laugh and get back on. We’re all out here to have some fun.
You don’t need to own a fancy wetsuit to give this great sport a try. Wear something you find comfortable and we’ll provide you with a PFD – keep in mind it’s likely that you’ll get wet.
You’re not going to see any gators in Shem Creek! Shem Creek is saltwater which makes alligators stay away.
